The history of St. Mary's is interwoven with the history of the Walkerville neighbourhood. The first church building was constructed in 1874 and stood on what is now Riverside Drive (formerly Sandwich Street). After a period of rapid expansion, the need for a more permanent and durable structure presented itself. The current building was commissioned by the sons of Edward and Mary Walker, and consecrated for public worship in 1904. The Walker brothers retained the architectural services of Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson, who went on to design some of the most striking Gothic revival churches in North America. St. Mary's distinctive style is modelled on English country churches, particularly 14th century Perpendicular Gothic. The church is filled with many charming details, as well as explemary craftsmanship by the woodcarver Johannes Kirchmayer and ceramicist Henry Mercer.
